National Elder Abuse Awareness Day is Sunday, but local officials will not wait that long to advise local residents about fraud and abuse problems.
An Elder Abuse and Fraud Summit will be held from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday at the Senior Activity Center at 623 Broad St. Lunch will be provided, said Edith Camp, executive director of the Council on Aging of Etowah County.
The meeting is sponsored by the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission and the Council on Aging of Etowah County.
Camp said the program is geared for the elderly as well as caregivers.
Also speaking at the summit will by Jon Costa, director of the Etowah County Department of Human Resources, who will speak on the physical and mental abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly.
Costa said in an interview last week that Etowah County has the third highest case load in the state of elderly abuse neglect or exploitation cases and was tied for second in the state in May in cases that were reported and investigated.
Etowah County averages about 30 elderly abuse cases reported monthly, according to Costa, who noted that the number of elderly abuse cases that are reported is up from last year's total of about 300.
