Elder Abuse: A Sad and Disturbing Reality (Lindsay, Canada)

By DAVE FLAHERTY
LINDSAY POST REPORTER

LINDSAY -June is Senior's Month, a time to show respect and admiration for elderly residents in the community.

However, a sad reality is some seniors are not being treated with respect and admiration but with abuse.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and Karen Anderson, the new coordinator of the Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Elder Abuse Prevention Network is hoping to spread the word of preventing this horrible issue.
The Network will have a display at the Lindsay Square Mall on June 11 to 13 and she will be taking part in a seniors information fair at Ross Memorial Hospital on June 12.

The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse first introduced World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in support of this plan of action.

The Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Elder Abuse Prevention Network is a network of health care, social service providers and justice sector staff endeavoring to promote the prevention of elder abuse through education and awareness and to assist the public in identifying the signs and symptoms of abuse.

If you a senior who is being abused or you know of elder abuse happening in the community, please call 324-7323 or 1-800-461-0327 .
