AN elderly grandmother attacked from behind by a thief in South Yarra is unlikely to return to her independent lifestyle after leaving hospital.
And a pregnant woman is recovering after she was knocked unconscious with a lump of wood in a Ringwood home attack.
Maria, 93, was standing near the corner of Toorak and Kensington roads when a thief jumped her from behind about 3.30pm Saturday, June 7, in full view of motorists.
He threw her to the ground, stole her handbag and walking stick, ran to a car, which he drove up Kensington Rd, did a U-turn and then sped past Maria on to Toorak Rd.
"It's a cowardly attack on an elderly lady," Maria's son, John, said yesterday.
"My mother's in a lot of pain . . . (and) the mental effect is something we don't know about.
"People shouldn't have to be put through something like this at this stage of their life.
"She's a very independent lady and unfortunately it may affect the way she lives her life from now on."
Sen-Det Jason Bourke, of the Moorabbin anti-robbery taskforce, said it was "a callous attack on a vulnerable member of our society".
Maria was treated for severe hip bruising at Cabrini Hospital.
Her attacker was in his early 20s, about 168cm and slim.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.
