Protecting the dignity of older persons
The European Commission is organising a high-level conference in Brussels on 17 March called "Protecting the dignity of older persons". The abuse of elderly people has become a serious problem in our society.
On this occasion, the DG for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities has produced a video report to tell the stories of people who have been abused by those around them, their family or healthcare staff. The video defines elder abuse and explains the different forms of violence and neglect. It also discusses some initiatives taken in different Member States to combat and prevent elder abuse, such as the implementation of a national protection programme in the United Kingdom, the creation of a helpline in the Czech Republic, and an awareness raising campaign by local authorities in the Netherlands.
