Ninety-year-old Viola Olsen learned a painful lesson last year after a woman named Crystal Miracle befriended her, then stole nearly $30,000 from her checking account over a period of weeks.

Olsen has allowed her story, presented in a videotaped interview of her by a prosecuting attorney, to be an object lesson for attendees of an "Elder Summit" -- a workshop aimed at providing older adults with information to help protect themselves from scams, fraud, physical abuse and other exploitation.

The free event -- including a continental breakfast and lunch plus door prizes -- is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 13 at Russ' Northside Restaurant off U.S. 31 and M-120.

The summit is sponsored by the Tri-County Protection Team, an alliance of professionals from Muskegon, Ottawa and Oceana counties who work to protect the elderly and disabled population.

To register or for more information, call 755-0434. Space is limited, so organizers ask that those interested call to register.
