Elder Abuse A Growing Problem (Canada)

Today is "World Elder-Abuse Awareness Day" an occasion to shine a spotlight on a heartbreaking phenomenon: .. research suggests up to 15-percent of seniors have been abused in one way or another, but experts say that's just the tip of the iceberg since elder abuse is under-reported.

Maxine Lithwick who heads the elder abuse prevention programme at the Cavendish Health and Social Services Center, tells CJAD news, abuse by family members is most common but least reported, since the elderly are ashamed to talk about it.

She says abuse is also common in institutions and private nursing homes, but abuse by a caregiver is less likely to be reported by seniors who're afraid of losing that help.
There's an elder-abuse information hotline 514-489-2287 . For those outside the Montreal area there's a toll-free number: 1-888-489-2287
