A MAN who broke into a 66-year-old widow's Kinglake home and beat her about the head in a drug-induced rage was sentenced to jail today.
Scott Daniel Duke, 29, of Castella, north-east of Melbourne, was sentenced to five-and-a-half years on one count of aggravated burglary and one of intentionally causing serious injury.
He will serve a minimum of three-and-a-half years' jail before being eligible for parole. The County Court heard that on December 19 last year, Duke, who was using methamphetamine, broke into the victim's home just before midnight while she slept in her bed. He hit her on the back of her head with the base of a bedside lamp and continued beating her for several minutes while also holding her around the throat.
Judge Les Ross said medical evidence showed Duke was suffering from a "methamphetamine induced psychosis at the time of the attack''. He knew the victim, who lived alone on an isolated rural property, having performed odd jobs for her in the past.
Judge Ross said Duke's home invasion was "every citizen's nightmare''. "This was a serious home invasion. To be attacked in your bed late at night is a serious example of the offences of aggravated burglary and intentionally causing serious injury.''
