Strabane councillors in vow to come out fighting on behalf of its elderly community
By Conor Sharkey
WE won't allow it to happen.
That was the stark message sent out from the chamber of Strabane District Council on Tuesday, where 13 furious councillors gathered to vent their anger at proposals to close Greenfield Nursing Home.
The Western Health and Social Care Trust has proposed to close the home as part of a drive to save £36 million over the next three years.
Three similar facilities in Derry, Omagh and Fermanagh have also been earmarked for closure.
But it appears that the closure will be far from a mere 'dotting the i's and crossing the t's' exercise for the Trust. Several challenges to the decision are already on the way to Health Minister Michael McGimpsey and shortly, a Strabane District Council delegation will visit Stormont to sound their opposition in person.
