It’s a problem that is usually talked about in hush tones, if at all, but a senior resource clinic in Wetaskiwin next month will shed light on the emotional issue of elder abuse.
According to provincial statistics, seven per cent of Alberta seniors have experienced some form of abuse in their lifetime.Several types of abuse
This can range from financial, physical and mental to even sexual abuse at the hands of others. Many times the victim knows his or her abuser. With that in mind, the monthly senior resource clinic scheduled for Nov. 24 at the Wetaskiwin Legion Arms is Elder Abuse: Let’s talk about it.
Wendy Volkart, a nurse with the seniors resource clinics, said the one-day event will teach those attending the definition of elder abuse, how prevalent is the problem and the different types of abuse.
Volkart said the clinic will help provide seniors with what is out there in terms of information and groups and possible telephone numbers to contact if the abuse should be happening to them.
We’re creating that awareness and then we will link them with the numbers, give them some resources that they need to follow up (with),” said Volkart. She added other clinics have run in the community for more than the past five years
