Carers to be 'no worse off': Rudd
Nassim KhademMarch 11, 2008
PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd has promised that seniors and carers will not be any worse off under the May budget, following suggestions that one-off bonus payments to these groups may not be repeated this year.
After spending days hosing down reports that the $500 seniors' bonus payment and $1600 carers' bonus would no longer be paid, Mr Rudd yesterday indicated that budget surpluses would be used to help these groups.
Chief executive of National Seniors Australia, Michael O'Neill, called on the Government to increase the age pension if it plans to stop bonus payments.

Any cuts to aged care and seniors services can only be seen as 'short-sighted'. With the 'tsunami of baby-boomers' fast increasing the demand for aged care, plans should be in place to tackle the the inevitable. The fear of inflation has brought about the 'razor gang' to cut government spending. The leak about possible cuts to fundings for carers and pensioners may be just a way of 'testing' public reaction. Well, the government have now got the reaction: A strong reaction from the public and media. Mr Rudd please hear our pleas.
