The New York State Assembly is trying to protect seniors. Lawmakers passed legislation Monday aimed at cracking down on people who abuse or exploit the elderly. The state says about 30,000 seniors are victims of abuse or exploitation.
The new legislation would charge scam artists with a felony instead of a misdemeanor if they target more than one elderly victim. It would also make it a felony to assault someone older than 65 years old if you are more than 10 years younger.
The bill would also add an elder law attorney to the state's Crime Victims Board, and develop education material about elder abuse.
The bill needs senate approval.
