Brighton Cremation Case Nursing Home Sold

February 21, 2008

A NURSING home criticised for the cremation of an elderly woman's remains before her death had been reported to authorities will be sold.

Doctors Jagdish Saraf and Madhu Saraf, who own Brighton Aged Care, yesterday told a meeting of residents and relatives they intended to sell the facility to a Victorian group.
Earlier this month, the Sarafs were found by Coroner Mark Johns to have acted "improperly" and "undesirably" in their handling of the death of Gladys Ruth Wells.

Mrs Wells, 71, died at the Brighton Rd, South Brighton, facility last July but she was cremated two days before her death was reported.

The Sarafs attributed her death to "cardiac arrest", without an autopsy. The state Medical Board is investigating the husband-and-wife doctor team.

Brighton Aged Care has twice been sanctioned by the Federal Government for breaches.

The Sarafs closed their other facility, Hyde Park Aged Care, in October after The Advertiser revealed an elderly woman was rolled in tomato sauce by nurses as a joke.

A federal inquiry found residents were at "immediate and severe risk".

Aged Care Association chief executive Paul Carberry yesterday said Federal Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot had given the Sarafs 28 days to show why their provider status should not be revoked. They instead chose to sell the facility.

The new owners will take over on March 1, subject to final approval by the federal Department of Health and Ageing.
