Panel tackles elder abuse issue

The abuse of the elderly continues to be a growing problem, with incidents more often than not unreported, area advocates for the elderly said Monday.
The remarks from a panel of officials and workers involving elder abuse were part of a Johnson County AARP Chapter program at Elder Services Inc.'s offices in Iowa City. It was designed to bring attention to a problem that tends to get little attention, said Mary Wiemann, executive director of Elder Services.
"People just don't talk about it," she said. "(The program is) to raise the level of awareness."
