PITTSBURGH (KDKA)
The former employees were accused of assaulting a 94-year-old woman who suffered from dementia and used a wheelchair.
They were looking after Thelma Bryant, 94, a Kane resident who used a wheelchair and suffered from dementia.
Charges were dropped against a third employee, but all three women will sign an agreement that they will never work in caring for the elderly in any capacity again.
The accusations against them included stepping on Ms. Bryant's feet, hitting her and bruising her forehead and throwing an orange at her.
Shelly Keene, 35, of West Mifflin pled guilty to simple assault.
Karen Perry, 46, of Homestead, pled guilty to harassment.
Charges were dropped against 30-year-old Shalayla Hatten of the Hill District.
Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala says new elder protection legislation better protects seniors from physical abuse because of the Kane case.
"The most important thing is they shouldn't be around the care of senior citizens," Zappala said. "Fortunately the injuries were not that substantial - but I thought their conduct was reprehensible."
District Attorney Zappala also has discussed changes in personnel and procedures to the director of Kane nursing centers to prevent any such future abuse.
The new county elder protection law joins legislation passed in 2007 that helps protect seniors from financial abuse.
