Advocacy groups for older people are working with the Tasmanian Government on way to to tackle elder abuse.
The two parties met yesterday to discuss strategies to prevent abuse.
The Council on the Ageing says up to 4,000 Tasmanians are subjected to elder abuse across all socio-economic groups.
Financial abuse is the most common, with older people having money taken from their bank accounts and even having the family home sold.
The council's Maxine Griffiths says talks with the Department of Human Services are a welcome development but a whole-of-government involvement is needed.
"I'm actually embarrassed by the fact that we are the only state that has not considered this strategy," she said.
"Tasmania leads the way in many, many areas but unfortunately an elder abuse strategy does not lift the mark with this State Government."
Ms Griffiths says with an election early next year, the opposition parties need to give details of their policies.
"We've heard them say that they do support the general concept of an elder abuse strategy but we'd like to see them name it up a little more clearly for us."
