My World…Your World…Our World…Free of Elder Abuse… World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15th. Elder abuse or the abuse of older adults is any action or inaction by a person in a relationship of trust that jeopardizes the health or well-being of an older person. There are several different types of abuse that are recognized: emotional, physical, financial, sexual and neglect.

Most often the abuser is an adult child or spouse; however older adults can also be abused by health care providers, neighbours, friends or other relatives. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides all of us with an opportunity to increase awareness of elder abuse, and the community supports available for those who need help. It also provides us with an opportunity to bring communities together to talk about an issue that is often hidden. On June 15th, 2009, the fourth WEAAD will be recognized in Manitoba. Please join us in recognizing the day by attending the provincial elder abuse awareness day event in Winnipeg. This event is for older adults, service providers and individuals who are concerned about this issue. It is being held at the Silver City St. Vital from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Doors will open at 10:00 a.m.). The event is free and lunch is available at a cost of $3.00 per person (payable at the door).

Activities include the following: Proclamation and greetings by the Minister responsible for Seniors; The official launch of the It’s Everybody’s Business Elder Abuse Video; Discussion panel on elder abuse in Manitoba; Highlights from the Manitoba Elder Abuse Awareness Day Student Project; Recognition of the winners of the first Manitoba Elder Abuse Awareness Recognition Awards; Entertainment and much more!

For further info on the event contact Age & Opportunity 1-888-333-3121.
