7 June 2009
The Australian Government has imposed sanctions on Vincent Court, an aged care facility in Kempsey New South Wales.
The Department imposed sanctions on Friday (5 June) following inadequate action by the provider to address issues of concern identified by the independent Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency (the Agency) in late January 2009.
The aged care provider was required to address non-compliance problems – but failed to do so.
- Information systems - due to ineffective information systems related to the provision of clinical care, residents are not always receiving care appropriate to their needs and preferences;
- Clinical care - residents who become unwell are not always reviewed by a registered nurse or a medical officer in a timely manner;
- Specialised nursing care needs - residents who require specialised nursing care do not always have their care needs met by appropriately qualified staff;
- Medication management - resident's medication is not managed safely and correctly; and
- Pain management - residents experiencing pain are not having their pain managed effectively.
The sanctions imposed are:
- Requiring the provider to appoint an adviser with nursing experience (approved by the Commonwealth) to help the facility comply with its responsibilities for a period of 6 months; and
- The provider is not eligible to receive Australian Government subsidies for any new residents during the period of the sanctions for a period of 6 months.
The Accreditation Agency and the Department of Health and Ageing will continue to monitor the nursing home closely.
