Woman arrested on elder abuse charges in Punta Gorda
20 May 2009
Punta Gorda Police detectives today arrested 58-year-old Letitia A. Calderwood of 22346 Hernando Avenue, Port Charlotte for the abuse and battery of a 76-year-old resident at an elder care facility where she was formerly employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
On May 19, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) notified the police department that they had received a report of the abuse from an administrator at the Punta Gorda Elderly Care Center. He stated that an employee of the center reported Calderwood had requested the assistance of her and an additional employee in helping a 76-year-old facility resident who had fallen in a bathroom. Calderwood and the two other facility employees had difficulty helping the resident to her feet and Calderwood subsequently kicked in her lower back while using a profanity. Once the resident was helped to her feet, Calderwood struck her in the face with an open hand.
Both employees were interviewed by detectives and provided statements describing the incident and the alleged battery and abuse.
Calderwood was interviewed by detectives and admitted to kicking and striking the resident as originally reported. She stated that her actions were done out of frustration although she knew the patient was disabled and had limited ability to stand on her own.
Calderwood was arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail where she was booked on the following charges and held with no bond:
• Battery on the Elderly, 3rd Degree Felony
• Abuse of the Elderly, 3rd Degree Felony
