A former health care worker has been given 30 days in jail for striking an 84-year-old woman with a television remote control.
The victim, an Alzheimer's patient at a Mississauga long-term care facility, sustained severe cuts and bruises to her upper body.
Hermina Anderson, 45, will serve her time on weekends under a sentence handed down today in a Brampton courtroom by Justice Elliott Allen.
Her children sent their mother to the Rexwood Rd. facility to be cared for, "not to be smacked around by a foul-tempered support worker," Allen said.
Anderson was found guilty earlier this spring of assault and assault with a weapon.
Today, she still maintained her innocence.
"I went into this profession because I care for the elderly and wanted to make a contribution to the community, " she said.
"I did not do this. It's just not true."
Anderson was fired in the fall of 2007 after an investigation into the incident at the Malton Village facility by Peel Region officials.
Anderson must also provide a DNA sample and be on probation for 18 months.
She was also ordered to undergo anger management counselling.
