A 29-year-old man has been jailed after he stole from an elderly woman in his care.
Ricardo Jorge Rodrigues Costa was given a 12-week sentence at Norwich Magistrates Court after admitting four cases of theft.
Costa, of Dover Court, Caister on Sea, was employed by a care agency as a carer and visited vulnerable and elderly people in their homes.
He was caught stealing two £5 notes from the handbag of an elderly lady, in her 90s, who he cared for at her Norwich home.
Despite keeping her handbag next to her chair Costa crawled on all fours and removed the notes, putting them in his jeans pockets.
He was arrested the following morning at his home. The notes were still in the pocket.
Det Con Donna Day, of Norfolk Constabulary's Adult Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “The fact that magistrates imprisoned Costa, despite being of previous good character, clearly sends a strong message to those who seek to abuse the trust of elderly or vulnerable people in Norfolk.
“The lady in this case was betrayed by her carer, a person she trusted and the family have been left devastated by his actions.
“Norfolk Constabulary remains committed to elder abuse and the Adult Abuse Investigation Unit has a team of dedicated investigators who deal solely with crimes against vulnerable adults.”
Costa was given a 12 week sentence for each of the four cases of theft to run concurrently.
