With temperatures hovering around the upper 80s on Mother’s Day, sheriff’s deputies found a 94-year-old mother living in a wooden shed with no running water or cooling system.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Hesperia station officials arrested a husband and wife living in a nearby travel trailer for abusing their mother, officials said on Tuesday.
The woman, her son, Ronald Rego, 59, and his wife, Miriam Rego, 45, were temporarily living on the property in the 11000 block of First Avenue while a home was being constructed, according to Roxanne Walker, spokeswoman for the Hesperia station.
The pre-fabricated shed did have a hospital-style portable toilet inside and a place for the victim to sleep, Walker said, while the travel trailer had running water.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home on Sunday following reports of a disturbance at the location, according to authorities.
Investigators called in Adult Protective Services who determined the elderly woman was in good condition and placed her in the care of a neighbor.
The couple was arrested for elder abuse and booked into the Victor Valley Jail.
Officials ask anyone who suspects any type of elder abuse to call Sheriff’s Dispatch at 245-4211 or Adult Protective Services at 243-6600.
