State honors advocates for elderly

Elder Abuse Awareness noted

By DEBORAH YETTER

State officials yesterday honored individuals and groups that work to protect the elderly as part of a rally in Frankfort to highlight May as Elder Abuse Awareness Month.

Janie Miller, secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, praised the honorees for their service to "ensure that our senior citizens are healthy and safe."

Among those receiving awards were:

Sandra Halter, an adult protective services worker in Graves County;

Jerry Jones, a Kentucky State Police detective at Post 1 in Mayfield;

David Hargrove, commonwealth's attorney in Graves County;

Kay Gunderson, a volunteer ombudsman at the Golden Living-Hill Creek Nursing Home in Louisville;

Dr. Wilson Wong, a consultant at the University of Kentucky and expert in elder abuse;

The Pennyrile Elder Abuse Council, one of 32 such councils in the state, to coordinate efforts to prevent and address elder abuse. Also recognized were leaders of all the councils in Kentucky.

State officials ask that everyone be watchful for signs of elder abuse or neglect -- such as bruises or unexplained injuries, malnutrition or a dirty or unkempt appearance.

Anyone who suspects a problem may report it to the toll-free hot line, (800) 752-6200.
