Police first opened an investigation into the theft on April 22, when a Long Island resident called to report that his 93-year-old father’s debit card had been stolen and close to $10,000 had been lost from his bank account, Inv. Edward Smith said.
An investigation conducted in partnership with the Elder Abuse Coalition led police to the man’s caretaker, 53-year-old Susan Graham of Utica. Police believe Graham stole the debit card and then acted with three others to withdraw the money from multiple ATMs over a period of time, Smith said.
Graham also allegedly stole and forged one of the victim’s personal checks for additional funds after one of the other suspects refused to return the stolen card to her, police said.
