New elder abuse policy for Cork hospitals
14/10/2008
by Deborah Condon
A new policy document, which provides step by step instructions on how hospital staff should proceed if they have concerns that an elderly patient is being abused, is being launched in Cork.
The document entitled Policy and Procedure on the management of elder abuse by all healthcare staff in Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital and South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, will be given to front line staff in the geriatric and emergency departments of Cork University Hospital (CUH) and will also be made available in other departments.
It is anticipated that this policy will then be rolled out in Mercy University Hospital and South Infirmary in the coming months.
The document outlines the various forms of elderly abuse and provides instructions on how staff should proceed if they have concerns or if a disclosure of abuse is made to them.
