Hospital nurses who tied up elderly patients with bed sheets and men's braces acted 'inappropriately'
By Daniel Bates
07th October 2008
A hospital trust boss has apologised after staff tied five elderly people to chairs and wheelchairs to restrain them.
The patients were tied down with men's braces, bedsheets and wheelchair straps, sometimes for long periods.
An inquiry was launched after a patient was discovered tied to his chair with a bedsheet around his stomach.
Investigators discovered four more occasions where 'inappropriate' restraints were used.
Health trust chief executive Dr Sarah Crowther said: 'It was clearly an unacceptable situation and one for which I absolutely unequivocally offer an apology.'
The incidents happened last year at Northwick Park Hospital in North West London on the Fletcher Ward, where almost half the 56 patients suffered from dementia.
