Two guilty in relative's fatal assault avoid prison
NAGANO (Kyodo) The Nagano District Court sentenced two members of a religious group Thursday to suspended three-year prison terms for joining others in beating to death their own relative at the sect's facility last September.
Guilty verdicts were handed down to Kazuhiro Okuno, 35, and his stepdaughter, Kuriko Mori, 38, for assaulting Okuno's wife, Motoko, 63, at the facility of the group Kigenkai in Komoro, Nagano Prefecture, along with other members last Sept. 24 and 25.
The victim, who was Mori's mother, was also a member of Kigenkai. The group's senior members ordered her beating because of what they saw as problematic behavior by her other daughter, who had also been assaulted by the members, according to prosecutors.
However, the judge suspended the sentence for five years on grounds that they "have shown remorse." The prosecutors had demanded five years in prison.
