Edinburgh Evening News
Staff and relatives of residents speak to the News about the varying standards in Edinburgh's nursing homes.
Our reports raising concerns about standards in care homes have prompted a huge response. The issues we have highlighted – including staffing, funding and training issues, as well as the efficiency of criminal record checks carried out on new staff – are being raised with government ministers. CHARLOTTE BAILEY, who spent a week working undercover at a city care home, spoke to care home staff and relatives of elderly residents about their experiences – both good and bad.
Jean Hodge's 80-year-old husband, John, was in Colinton Nursing Home for respite care. She paid £1300 for eight days, but took him out a day early after growing concerned about his care.
John has dementia and needs full 24-hour-a-day care, including help feeding, washing and dressing himself.
"I was appalled by the condition my husband was in. He was soiled between his legs because he had not been washed properly. They did not give him the basic care he needed. He has lost weight after being in there only a week.
Colinton Nursing Home said it was confident Mr Hodge had received good care. A spokesperson said: "The issues raised by Mrs Hodge have been thoroughly looked in to and many were not substantiated.
