12 calls to elder abuse helpline
A HELPLINE for people to report abuse in care homes has an uncertain future, after its trial received just 12 calls.
In October, Essex County Council joined forces with groups including Action on Elder Abuse and the Essex Vulnerable Adult Protection Committee to launch the helpline.
The helpline was set up in conjunction with 20 care homes throughout the county for six months.

Despite only receiving 12 calls during the pilot, Paul Bedwell, development manager for the Essex Safeguarding Adult Board, said it had been a useful experience.
Mr Bedwell said data from the line would now be reviewed to decide whether to continue it, or extend a similar scheme nationwide.

More should be done, by different levels of government, to increase Elder Abuse Awareness. People need to know that they have human rights, and if they are abused, they have an avenue of assistance.
Many elder abuse victims, who have been abused by family members, often are NOT aware that they do not have to put up with the abuse.
Then again, many such victims do not want to report for fear of being isolated from the abuser family member(s). "He/she is all I've got..." is often said by these victims.
