A Napa County man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he tried to kill his parents by poisoning them with prescription drugs.
Forty-nine-year-old Jeffrey Niebling entered the plea Thursday to attempted murder, elder abuse and poisoning charges.
Authorities allege that Niebling spiked his parents' smoothies with the drug, benzodiazepine, which acts as a depressant and sedative.
His mother lost consciousness while driving on June 24 and crashed into a tree. Meanwhile, his father fell unconscious at home and was taken to the emergency room by the couple's other son. Tests on both parents found toxic levels of the drug.
The brother told investigators that Niebling had a "toxic relationship" with their parents.
If convicted on all charges, Niebling could face life in prison.
