UKIAH, Calif.,
Employees of a Ukiah nursing home were charged with elder abuse after allegedly coating dementia patients with slippery ointment as a prank, authorities said.
After a probe by the California Bureau of Elder Abuse six employees of the Valley View Skilled Nursing Facility were charged last week by Mendocino County District Attorney Meredith Lintott with four misdemeanor counts including elder abuse, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.
The office of Attorney General Jerry Brown alleges the workers put ointment on patients "head to foot," but because of their condition they were unable to object.
"As part of a cruel and shocking prank, these caregivers abused defenseless elders," Brown said.
The six workers were fired, the newspaper said.
Charges were filed against Jenny Bido, 26; Christina Guerrero, 30; Jared Buckley, 29; Jennifer Burton, 33; Kathleen Phillips, 23; and Monica Smith, 51.
Bail was set at $7,500 each.
