Signs of elder abuse

Signs of elder abuse
AUGUST 7, 2010
Each year in this country, over 2 million seniors become victims of abuse and neglect. And for every case we know about, it’s estimated another five or more cases go unreported.
Liz Bishop discovered in her recent series on “Caring for Seniors” that elder abuse has become such a problem locally that the Albany County District Attorney, for one, has set up a special advisory council to make it easier for the elderly to report abuse and get the help they need.
The following are some of the warning signs for elder abuse, per Albany County’s Department for Aging:
- Changes in personality or behavior, withdrawn, passive or fearful especially around their caregiver
- Delay in seeking medical treatment, unkempt appearance, dirty or inappropriate clothing, missing dentures, glasses, hearing aid
- Discrepancy between income and standard of living
- Unavailability to visitors or callers, visits monitored by caregiver
- Missing checks, income or possessions, changes in will, power of attorneyor policies
- Unexplained or frequent injuries or broken bones
