Elderly people may be more likely to fall for scams through the Internet, by mail or telephone than the general public, said Sgt. Dave Helvey of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
That's one of the reasons, he said, that he agreed to be one of four speakers at a seminar to be held Sept. 16. The seminar will focus on protecting the elderly against fraud and abuse. It is being organized by Aging and Adult Care of Central Washington and the Chelan Douglas Elder Abuse Prevention Council.
Helvey, who has investigated elder abuse cases, said he thinks elderly people are susceptible because they are more trusting than the general public and are less knowledgeable about technology.
