Family crisis centre works to curb the abuse of the elderly

SHEDIAC - The neglect and abuse of seniors exists even in New Brunswick, reminds a resource group that wants to do something to stop the practice.
It's a social problem that must come out of the closet, according to Shediac's Beausejour Family Crisis Resource Centre.
The organization has produced an 18-minute video on DVD entitled "Elder Abuse ... Let's put a stop to it!" in both official languages for distribution to the general public and any organization that wants a copy.
"Many elders in our communities are victim of abuse and neglect," with the abuse usually known only to the victim and the perpetrator, said Eva LeBlanc, executive director and client intervener for the centre.
"This DVD will help increase public awareness and educate elders, people who work with that clientele and children who take care of their aging parents," she explained.
Any action or inaction that compromises the health or the well-being of an elderly person is considered as violence against elders, she added.
