Man Sentenced for Stealing His Parents' Life Savings (TN. USA)

September 2nd, 2009

A Rogersville man who admittedly wiped out his parents’ life savings to the tune of $329,627 over a 2½-year period was sentenced Monday to serve 4½ years in prison.

Thomas Lee Patrick, 49, 112 Heritage Drive, Rogersville, pleaded guilty Monday before Circuit Judge John Dugger to one count of theft over $10,000, a Class C felony.

Patrick had originally been charged with theft over $60,000, a Class B felony punishable by up to 12 years in prison but was granted the reduced plea agreement with permission by his father and siblings. His mother was alive at the time the thefts occurred but has since passed away.

The theft was reported to the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office in June 2008 after Patrick’s siblings checked their parents’ finances and found that Patrick had gained power of attorney over his elderly parents and stolen their entire life savings.

According to reports, Patrick had made several financial transfers using his computer from his parents’ account to his account between Jan. 1, 2006, and June 24, 2008.
