The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency will undertake a record 7000 visits (up from 4000) to nursing homes next financeial year.
They will include announced and unannounced visits.
Minister for Ageing , Justine Elliot has also instructed staff to review the policy on police checks saying she wanted it extended to cover all staff, not just those with unsupervised access to residents.
She said she would close loopholes in nursing home regulation by strengthening the powers of the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.
"It is essential that the agency have the necessary powers to undertake their inspections and investigations thoroughly" she said.
