At a glance - the new senior abuse law

Abusing a senior: fine of up to $10,000 and/or up to three years in prison. Name on Senior Abuse Register for minimum of three years.
Revealing confidential information from the register: fine of up to $5,000 and/or one year maximum jail term.
Professionals failing to report suspicions of elder abuse: fine up to $3,000 and/or six-month jail term.
Revealing the identity of a person who reports suspected abuse: fine up to $3,000 and/or six-month jail term.
Employing a care worker whose name is on the register: fine up to $10,000 and maximum three-year jail term.
Communicating information from the register obtained in the performance of duties without permission of registrar or court: fine of up to $2,000.
Making public information identifying a senior who is a witness or participant to a hearing under the Act or a relative of the senior: fine of up to $5,000 and/or maximum one-year jail term.
Publishing a report contrary to a court order prohibiting such in cases involving harm of a senior: fine up to $5,000 and/or maximum one-year jail term.
• Those who name is placed on the register are disqualified from seeking employment or being employed as careworker and from managing or having a financial interest in a senior home or institution.
