Elder Abuse Prevention: New Programs for Barrie Seniors (Canada)

Government moves to stop elder abuse; Investing in programs for Barrie seniors
Posted 11 May 2008

The provincial government is taking action to ensure the safety and well-being of Barrie's seniors by investing in programs to prevent elder abuse.

The Simcoe County Elder Abuse Prevention Network, located at Royal Victoria Hospital, is receiving $4,000 from the Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (ONPEA) to help with service co-ordination, front-line staff training and public education.

"Elder abuse in any form cannot be tolerated," Barrie MPP Aileen Carroll said. "This investment is part of the McGuinty government's elder abuse strategy to ensure the safety and well-being of Ontario seniors."

It's estimated that between 65,000 and 130,000 Ontario seniors suffer some form of elder abuse.

The Ontario government recently provided $209,000 to ONPEA to support the work of community-based elder abuse networks across the province.

The funding is in addition to the $1.65 million announced last year by the province to help put an end to elder abuse. Such investments are the first of their kind in Canada.

"The generous support by the Ontario government reinforces its commitment to helping seniors who have been abused or are at risk of being abused," ONPEA chairwoman Lori Flynn said. "This funding will help local elder abuse networks mobilize community activity in the prevention and response to elder abuse."

This investment allows ONPEA to deliver one-time grants to each of Ontario's 52 local elder abuse networks across Ontario.
