George Alexander Kaneklides, 57, and his wife, Ann, 53, were each facing charges of domestic neglect of a disabled or elderly adult and domestic abuse of a disabled or elderly adult. The couple was originally charged in April of 2006.
Holding a piece of paper that betrayed his shaking hands, Mr. Kaneklides, now of Coats, stood before Wake County Judge Paul Gessner during a special session of Harnett County’s Superior Court and entered an Alford plea to one misdemeanor count of patient neglect.
In exchange for the Alford plea, which allows him to assert his innocence while admitting the state has sufficient evidence against him to convict, Mr. Kaneklides was sentenced to serve a 75-day suspended sentence, one-year supervised probation and 50 hours of community service with associated fees of $200. The Alford plea is counted as a guilty plea on court records.
