Heartless Birmingham carer stole £2,000 from dead man's bank account

A HEARTLESS carer who emptied the bank account of a dead man before he had been laid to rest has been spared jail.
Christine Britland used a bank card to withdraw up to £300 a day from the account of James Pick after he passed away in a Solihull care home.
She has since offered to pay back to the family of the 85-year-old former sailor a total of £8,000 which she maintains was given to her as a gift by the frail pensioner.
Britland, aged 44, of Elmdon Lane, Marston Green, admitted seven counts of theft totalling £2,040 at Warwick Crown Court and yesterday she was given a six-month supervision order.
The victim’s angry family said they believed Britland had been able to dodge telling the truth by pleading guilty and avoiding a trial.
After Mr Pick died in October 2007, his family found that his account had been plundered.
Britland had made six withdrawals of £300 and one of £240 on consecutive days before his funeral, which she attended.
After her arrest she agreed to pay back a total of £8,000 to the family.
