A North Salem nursing home aide tied an 83-year-old woman to her wheelchair with a bed sheet, took her into a common room, turned out the lights and napped - while she remained restrained for about an hour.
The incident at the Waterview Hills Rehabilitation and Nursing Home occurred May 16, 2008. The certified nurse's aide, Pierre Obas, pleaded guilty to violating public health law involving the abuse, neglect and mistreatment of a person, a misdemeanor.
Obas, 72, had to surrender his nurse aide's certificate and is prohibited to work in such a capacity for one year that began on his sentencing date, April 27, court records show.
"Think about this individual being put in a dark room. This is not what you do to a human being," said Cynthia Rudder, director of special projects for the Long Term Care Community Coalition, a watchdog group that tracks enforcement actions against nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. "How does an aide go into a common room, turn off the light and nobody notices?"
