Other types of family violence need to be counted, too

The Public Children Services Association of Ohio plays an invaluable role in tracking the number of reports of child abuse and neglect in our state ("Ohio advocacy group finds child abuse cases up," The Advocate, April 2). Their work helps policy makers and the public understand the scope of the problem and can guide efforts to allocate scarce resources most efficiently
.... the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is providing data on more than 16,000 reports of elder abuse from all 88 counties. The numbers we receive are completely de-identified, so there is no risk to people's privacy, yet they will be critical towards helping Ohio recognize how common and consequential family violence has become.
As any public health expert knows, a problem doesn't count until you count it.
