Daughter faces charges in elder abuse case
13 April 2009
Barrie Police officers have charged a 67-year-old woman after her mother was admitted to Royal Victoria Hospital Friday.
ER staff called police after an 88-year-old woman was brought in by ambulance with gangrene in her legs.
Gangrene is the decay and death of tissues, caused by a lack of blood flow to a part of the body, usually the extremities. Gangrene can also include a bacteria infection. Chances of developing gangrene are higher if a person already has a condition that can slow blood flow, such as diabetes.
Symptoms of gangrene include a blue or black discoloration of the skin, severe pain followed by numbness, and a foul-smelling discharge.
Police said the patient later died from other health complications, but hospital staff was concerned about the lack of care given to her, and her daughter was investigated for elder abuse. Officers have charged her with failing to provide the necessities of life.
