Help for Townsville seniors
April 13th, 2009
HUNDREDS of local seniors have been ripped off $3 million by people they trust in the past 18 months alone with dozens more subjected to physical, emotional and even sexual abuse, figures from the Seniors Legal and Support Service say.
Elder abuse is any form of financial, physical, emotional, sexual or social abuse of seniors and is often inflicted by the people closest to the elderly including immediate family.
The Townsville SLSS estimates only one in five victims of elder abuse come forward to ask for help for fear their abusers, many of whom are friends or even family members, will find out.
SLSS reference group member Nev Abbey said he hoped all victims would seek help from the free confidential service which employed a counsellor, solicitor and welfare worker and had the power to help seniors out of abusive situations.
For free confidential advice or assistance contact SLSS on 4721 5511 or visit their office at 181 Sturt St.
