Elder Abuse to be Focus of Three Year Program for Local Group
April 11, 2009
The Atlantic Community Health Promotion Network is gearing up for a three year program focusing on elder abuse. Executive Director Lisa Pike says the new program is funded by Service Canada through the New Horizons Project. They're partnering with local groups to make it happen, including the Red Cross and Teachers on Wheels.
Pike says they will conduct a major research project throughout Atlantic Canada, and will bring together care givers and family members to hold a forum on the topic, and produce resources for seniors and families to turn to. Pike says they were surprised to learn the extent of elder abuse in the community including everything from financial , physical and emotional abuse, to sexual abuse. Pike says the feedback so far as been great, and people are interested. The three year program is still in the initial stages.
