Elder Abuse Suspect Now Accused of Stealing Woman's Stimulus Check

Mar 6, 2009

A woman arrested late last year for elder abuse in Carteret County is now accused of cashing the victim's federal stimulus check.

Jennifer Hodges is now charged with felony exploitation of the elderly.

Beaufort police say the 80-year-old victim's son was alerted in late November by Sound Bank that someone was trying to cash his mother's stimulus check. Police say the $1,200 check was successfully cashed a short time later at a Wachovia branch.

Police say the investigation was stalled until the federal government could produce the cashed check.

Back in December the elderly woman was lying in her own feces on the floor of her bathroom. Police say Hodges, who was hired as the woman's caregiver, had refused to come help the elderly woman to the bathroom, and left her there for over an hour.
