HUNTINGTON BEACH– The caregiver of an 85-year-old woman in Huntington Beach has been arrested on charges of financial elder abuse, fraud, forgery and identity theft.

A tip led Huntington Beach Police detectives to Constance Wakefield’s home, where they interviewed Cindi Dee Powell, 54, before taking her into custody.

Powell was on probation for previous financial elder abuse. Detectives have investigated this case since December 2008.

Detectives allege that Powell took $122,000 from Wakefield. According to a news release today, police believe Wakefield may have lost more than $200,000. Powell is suspected of taking out home loans and opening bank accounts in Wakefield's name.

Powell, a Huntington Beach resident, has been Wakefield’s caregiver since 2006.
According to police, Wakefield was stable financially before Powell became her caregiver, but she is now in danger of losing her home.
