AG Asks Retirees to Join Sleuth Program: to Help Stop Fraud and Scams Against Elderly (Arizona, USA)

AG asks retirees to join sleuth program
September 20, 2009

Retired folks, often the target of con-artists, are now being recruited by the state of Arizona to help catch the swindlers in action.
The Arizona Attorney General's Office is asking for volunteer retirees to join their Senior Sleuths program. According to the AG's office, Senior Sleuths is a plan of action designed to help Arizona seniors prevent others from becoming victims of fraud and abuse.
"Protecting Arizona seniors from abuse and exploitation is an important priority for the attorney general's office," said Terry Goddard, Arizona attorney general.
"Because so many crooks and con-artists take aim at seniors, I will continue to keep older Arizonans in the forefront of our consumer protection work and prosecute law violations."
According to the AG's office, senior volunteers will be trained to identify and report scams and fraud, including Medicare fraud, and to use their knowledge to educate other seniors.
The AG's office said seniors can help nab the bad guys by collecting suspicious junk mail, keeping a log of telemarketing phone calls they receive, attending suspicious free presentations and making regular reports.

For more information or to volunteer log on to www.azag.gov, e-mail SeniorSleuths@azag.gov or call 1-602-542-7578.
