Woman arrested for elder abuse

A Dalton woman was arrested Saturday for taking an elderly disabled veteran’s money and leaving him in a hot basement swarming with flies, authorities said.Crystal Machelle Bryant, 33, of 448 W. Field Road, was charged by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with felony theft by taking and cruelty to a person 65 years or older. She bonded out of the jail on Sunday for $10,000. A date for an appearance in Superior Court has not been set, a jail spokesman said.
“It’s been an ongoing investigation,” said Maj. John Gibson, who noted officers first responded to the West Field Road residence on June 24 where an elderly resident, described in an incident report as a disabled veteran, rented a home.
When the landlord came by looking for the rent on June 20, he told officers he found the 73-year-old man in a “small bottom room with nothing to drink or eat, and flies swarming all around,” according to the incident report.
