After More Than 3 Years, Elder Neglect Case Goes to Trial (NC. USA)

More than three years after they were charged, the separate cases of a Lillington couple charged with neglecting the husband's 78-year-old mother seem to be coming to a head. The husband is scheduled for trial Monday and the charges in her case are in the process of being dismissed.

George Kaneklides, 57, and wife Ann, 53, are each charged with domestic abuse of a disabled or elder adult and domestic neglect of a disabled or elder adult for allegedly intentionally neglecting his mother Linda Arab Kaneklides so badly she was said to have suffered serious mental and physical injuries.

The elder Mrs. Kaneklides died in a Greensboro hospital in April 2006, four days after her son and daughter-in-law were charged by the Harnett County Sheriff's Office with her abuse.

Investigators said Mr. Kaneklides received power of attorney over his mother's financial affairs after she moved in, which he then used to obtain large mortgages on both the Buies Creek and Salisbury homes.

Mr. Kaneklides' trial is set to begin Monday in Harnett County Superior Court with jury selection.
