Geneva, IL -
Two Geneva women have been indicted for elder abuse in the death of their mother.
Jill Barry, 53, and Julie M. Barry, 46, both of the 400 block of Peyton Street in Geneva, were charged today with two counts each of criminal neglect of an elderly person in the death of their mother, Mary Barry.
Geneva paramedics arrived at Mary Barry’s home April 20, 2007, to find her near death, in a bed soaked with urine, with festering bed sores and ants crawling on her body.
Barry’s two daughters, who were living with her, called 911 at about 9:45 a.m. after they found Barry unresponsive, fearing she suffered a stroke.
A Geneva Fire Department paramedic trying to treat Barry was so overtaken by the stench of urine that he became sick in the ambulance, said Kane County Deputy Coroner Loren Carrera during an inquest July 11.
Barry, 84, died April 27 at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva.
The Kane County coroner determined that Barry died of pneumonia.
During a July 18, coroner’s inquest, a deputy coroner testified that the pneumonia had been enhanced by a history of bladder cancer, dehydration and malnourishment due to neglect. Barry weighed 70 pounds when she died. She was between 5 foot 4-inches and 5 foot 6 inches.
The Barry sisters are expected in court Tuesday, Jan. 29.
